Funerary practices popular during the Tang Dynasty continued into the period from 907 to 960, when separatist regimes, known as the five dynasties and ten kingdoms, were set up in different parts of China. Large numbers of pottery figurines have been unearthed from tombs of kings of local regimes and their officials. While assuming roughly the same style as figurines of the Tang Dynasty, these invariably have local characteristics.

China became unified again under the Song Dynasty (960-1279) and, by that time, funerary practices had changed a lot. Paper money and paper figures with skeletons of thin bamboo strips were burned in honor of the dead, replacing the use of pottery and wooden figurines buried alongside the dead. Despite that, archeologists have still been able to find figurines used as funerary objects, including some that are of great historic and cultural value. A whole array of stone figures has been unearthed from a Song tomb at Yandian, Henan Province. China's porcelain capital, Jingdezhen of Jiangxi Province, became known for a number of porcelain entertainers unearthed from one of the tombs that date back to the same dynasty. It is interesting to note that pottery figurines have also been found in tombs of the Liao and Jin dynasties, which were ethnic minority political regimes existing side by side with the Song that ruled the main parts of the country. Two pottery figurines, one male and the other female, unearthed from a Liao tomb at Changping under Beijing's jurisdiction have a hairstyle typical of the Qidan (Khitan) ethnic group. From a tomb built in 1210 under the Jin regime archeologists have found painted figurines in the shape of actors and actresses, which are recognized for their importance to study of the ancient Chinese drama.
